‘The Academy must retain its uniqueness as a performing arts institution; it has taken us 30 years to be where we are now’ said Yiu Song-lam, the first graduate who studied at the then brand-new campus in Wanchai, adding that the ‘performing’ element is what makes the Academy special.
Yiu took up the oboe at a relatively older age of 15 when he was recruited by the government’s Music Office and given free lessons. On completion of his secondary education at Salesian School, he decided to study the oboe. He is grateful to his parents who have been supportive.
For Yiu, performance is a part of his life, that is until the onset of an eye problem. Yiu was 26 and studying in Cologne, Germany when he suffered from regular severe headache and double-vision; fearing for the worst, he went through many medical examinations and when the doctors could not identify the problem, he had no choice but to return to Hong Kong. For the next nine years, Yiu had to deal with occasional attacks later diagnosed as a rare disorder of the brain’s nerve system. Then there were the side-effects of his medication. All these meant that Yiu’s learning was disturbed and his career suffered.
On reflection, Yiu was not bitter about the experience, however much he suffered for it. “ I am happy that what I have got through from my case history, it reminds me that we should not take things for granted. I am pleased to have done what I have, with a career as an oboist and a happy family,” Yiu said. Now a father to nine-year-old Carlos, Yiu said he gives his son a lot of freedom in what he does in terms of music education, but insists on his learning the piano, aside from the oboe and erhu.
With persistence and passion for music, Yiu keeps up with his performance career while he is dedicated to promoting the rich but as yet rarely known wind chamber music repertoire to audiences by the performances he takes up with his 16-member Hong Kong Wind Kamerata. The group is also a platform for wind players to get together; Yiu is looking to provide performance opportunities for a different generation of wind players. Each year, the group plays several concerts and festivals in Hong Kong or overseas. In Hong Kong, the group makes regular appearances at the Le French May festival where they once shared the stage with legendary oboist Maurice Bourgue.
Yiu encourages students now studying at the Academy to work hard and at the same time develop management skills which will be useful in preparation for a successful career ahead.
Over the years, Yiu has taught a number of outstanding pupils including the following :
