A total of 745 performances were held in Academy
venues in 2008/2009, slightly up on last year. Of these
performances, 352, or just under half, were Academy
presentations.
Audience, occupancy and utilisation figures all show
increases on the previous academic year. Total audience
attendance was 277,338. The Lyric Theatre’s average
occupancy was 10.23 hours per day and the average
utilisation across all licensed performing venues was
9.33 hours per day. The Lyric Theatre was closed for five
weeks during the summer of 2008 for the second phase
of major renovation. This followed a similar closure period
in the summer of 2007, with an opportunity cost to hiring
income of more than HK$1M each year. Nevertheless,
at year end the Venue Management account posted a
surplus of HK$7.753M.
Hiring activity at Béthanie, the Academy’s landmark
heritage campus, increased 32% year on year in terms of
gross revenue. Income from weddings, corporate events
and other hirings at Béthanie totalled HK$3.105M to
30 June (HK$2.346M in 2007/08), giving a net surplus
of HK$1.527M. Renovation of the former Dairy Farm
Administration Building adjacent to the Academy’s
Béthanie campus was completed in June 2009. The
heritage building, which dates from the early 1900’s,
is leased from the HKSAR Government and will house
the School of Theatre and Entertainment Arts’ Fast-track
Programmes.
Construction has commenced on the Hong Kong Jockey
Club Amphitheatre. This project, made possible by
the generous support of the Hong Kong Jockey Club
Charities Trust, aims to improve the comfort and usability
of the open-air Amphitheatre, which was previously
susceptible to traffic noise and inclement weather. The
main construction tender for the air-conditioned enclosure
was awarded on 13 June 2008, with completion scheduled
for second quarter of 2010.
