Student Achievements
Master’s degree students in Dance, Drama, and Music
presented original creative work and performances in
productions, concerts, and lecture recitals at Academy and
outside venues and for outside professional organisations
as part of their work in fulfillment of
Professional Practice
Thesis Project
requirements. With the completion in
2008/2009 of the first cohort of MFA in Drama majors
in Directing and Playwriting, students in the MFA in
Drama presented their work on professional stages
outside the Academy. These productions introduced
new talents to prospective audiences and allowed
audiences to benchmark student achievement with that
of established artists.
The production of
Rope of Love
written by MFA in Drama
(Playwriting) student, Pak Li Hon-chung was performed
by School of Drama students on 3-4 and 6-8 April at the
Fringe Theatre. Two Directing major students presented

with professional drama companies.
Sam Leung Wing-sum directed the production
with Chung Ying Theatre Company for a production
at the Black Box Theatre of Kwai Tsing Theatre from
26 to 28 December 2008 and Johnny Fung Siu-cheung
directed the production
The Lark
with Hong Kong
Repertory for the production at Hong Kong Repertory
Black Box Theatre from 7 to 22 January 2009. Other
notable outside productions included MFA in Dance
Carlos Pacis’ choreography
Shifts in Notion
by the Hong Kong Ballet on 14 to 15 April in Rehearsal
Room GR2 of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and MFA
in Dance student, Wu Yi-san’s choreography for Unlock
Dancing Plaza. Performed in the Leisure and Cultural
Services funded Community Cultural Ambassador Scheme
at numerous venues across Hong Kong from September
to November 2008, Yi-san’s work demonstrated the
versatility of student achievement in creating accessible
productions for diverse audiences.
Scholarships and Awards
18 Master’s degree students received scholarships to
help support their study at the Academy. Among these,
11 full scholarships were awarded by the Society of
the Academy for Performing Arts and seven by private
donors. Additionally, MFA in Dance student, Ma Jia was
awarded a scholarship from Bates Dance Festival to
attend a 3-week intensive programme in modern dance
in Maine, USA. in July 2008.
Student Recruitment
Student recruitment for MFA and MMus programmes for
2009/2010 academic year was conducted from December
to March, with interviews and auditions held from March
to June. Altogether 109 applications were received for
all Master’s degree programmes. 48% of applicants were
from Hong Kong and 52% were non-local. Among the
non-local applicants, 88% were from the Mainland, the
remaining were from Taiwan, Macau, Thailand, Malaysia,
and France.
