The School of Music’s opera production in March 2009
was Bizet’s
starring Wu Qianqing and Shanice
Ng Hoi-shan as Carmen, and Chen Chen and Chen Yong
as Don José. Graduate Albert Lim Chun took the part
of Escamillo, Alan Cumberland conducted the Academy
Orchestra, and the production was directed by Lo King-
man. Vocal student Judy Lim competed in the Francesco
Paolo Tosti Competition in Ortona in September and was
awarded third place and the award for the most talented
young singer. In June the Vocal Department provided
the soloists and choir for concert performances with the
SAR Philharmonic at City Hall and the Academy’s Concert
Hall of Puccini’s
La Bohème
. Etta Fung sang Mimi, Chen
Yong sang Rodolfo, Phoebe Tam and Judy Lim shared
the role of Musetta, Marcello and Schaunard were sung
by graduates Albert Lim, Apollo Wong, Sylvester Tse and
the rest of the vocal department sang the other roles and
the chorus. Nancy Yuen, Paul Cibis and Lucia Forgione
came as visiting artists to the department.
Keyboard Department
Rachel Cheung Wai-ching, who at 17 was the youngest
competitor, was awarded the second prize and a special
Schubert prize in the Alessandro Casagrande piano
competition in Italy in June 2008. Rachel performed a
duo recital with cellist Xiong Yin in the Shanghai Concert
Hall in July and then went back to Europe to perform
again in the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki,
Poland. Twin 19 year-old pianists Chau Lok-ping & Chau
Lok-ting went to Tel-Hai International Piano Music Camp
in Israel to be coached as a piano duo, and were awarded
the Sara Lahat Outstanding Duo Prize. In November
the Chau twins competed in the Bialystok Piano Duo
competition in Poland where they won the overall first
prize and three special prizes. The girls -- both pupils
of Eleanor Wong -- were the youngest competitors,
and were competing against much older professional
piano duos. Gabriel Kwok’s pupil Zhao Ning went to
Bratislava in September to compete in the sixth Johann
Nepomuk Hummel International Piano Competition
and won the first prize after performing Chopin’s 2nd
piano concerto with the Slovak National Philharmonic
Orchestra. Eleanor Wong’s junior student Aristo Sham
won first prize in the under 13 category in the Junior
Gina Bachauer International Piano Competion in Salt
Lake City in July. Distinguished visiting keyboard artists
during the year have included Yefim Bronfman, Aquiles
Delle Vigne, Peter Jablonski, Angela Hewitt, Leif Ove
Andsnes, Seymour Lipkin, Richard McMahon, Betty Woo,
Vanessa Latarche, Alexander Braginsky, Marian Hahn, Lee
Kum Sing, Sergio Tiempo, Joseph Banowetz, Stephen
Savage, Colin Stone, Jerome Rose, Alexander Tamir, Yves
Henry and Howard Shelley. Gabriel Kwok was invited
to teach at the Tel-Hai summer course in Israel, and in
the Conservatory in Wuhan.
