Esa-Pekka Salonen came to the Academy in October
to conduct an informal performance of Sibelius 2nd
Symphony, and arranged for six of the Los Angeles
Philharmonic Orchestra principals to give masterclasses.
In May the Academy Symphony Orchestra performed
Mahler’s 1st Symphonywith Alan Cumberland, and in June
had a month of orchestral projects. Perry So conducted a
symphonic suite from Wagner’s opera
Tristan und Isolde
and Chopin’s 1st piano concerto with Rachel Cheung as
the soloist, and conducted a second concert with concerti
performed by students Chan King-tsun, Man Hay, Peggy
Sung, Ricel Guiman, Tiffany Au and Zhao Ning. Alan
Cumberland conducted another concerto concert with
Chak Yuet-man, Wan Lok-yu, Paw Man-hing, Choi Tsz-
wing, Levin Chan Ling-fai, Beverly Leung Yee-Kai and
an orchestral work by Steve Hui Ngo-shan. With Etta
Fung and Chen Yong as vocal soloists, the orchestra also
performed with Dr Peter Guth for September’s
Vienna
Opera Ball
. The ball raised HK$200,000 towards helping
a graduate from the School of Music to study for a year
at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien,
with this scholarship being awarded to Chen Yong.
Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra/
Academy Symphony Orchestra project
This was the fifth year that Edo de Waart has conducted
a joint HKPO/HKAPA orchestra in concert, this year
choosing to perform the Alpine Symphony of Richard
Strauss as the main work. It was preceded in the concert
by Saint-Saëns 2nd piano concertowith Academy graduate
Colleen Lee as the soloist.
