Visiting Artists and Students
In October 2008, the School hosted a one-week visit by
a group of students from the West Australia Academy of
Performing Arts (WAAPA), led by the Head of Drama, Chris
Edmund. They not only attended the School’s classes,
viewed the drama students’ rehearsals, workshops and
presentations, but also performed their production, an
Australian play
Cloudstreet
, at the Studio Theatre. This
visit was following the Drama School students’ visit to
WAAPA in June 2008. Students and teachers from both
institutions felt this kind of exchangewas extremely fruitful.
The school was also fortunate enough to welcome visits
from several leading professionals during the course
of the year. November saw the well-known American
director Ping Chong give a workshop and a lecture and
Professor Jonothan Neelands give masterclasses for the
MFA students of Drama and Theatre Education. Mr Li
Liuyi, the well-known Chinese director from the Beijing
People’s Arts Theatre, was invited to the School to give
a lecture to MFA and BFA Directing students in February,
In the same month, French director Alan Timar led a
one-week workshop for MFA Directing and Playwriting
students. The director and teacher Bert van Dijk from
New Zealand assumed the mantle of School’s Artist-in-
Residence during the second semester. He taught both
BFA and MFA courses and also directed the MFA students’
project: Devising Theatre Pieces.
External Examiner
Professor Hao Rong, Associate Head of ActingDepartment
of the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, was invited
to be this year’s External Examiner, concentrating on
the School’s Acting programme. Professor Hao viewed
classes, workshops, School production and project,
and talked with teachers and students. His report was
detailed and positive.
This year the School had worked on two co-productions
with professional theatre companies, who have kindly
supported its MFA programme by offering opportunities
for students’ professional practice.

Gao Xingjian’s

Repertory Theatre,
The Lark
, written by Jean Anouilh
and directed by MFA graduating student Johnny Fung
Siu-cheung, was performed at the Hong Kong Repertory
Theatre Black Box in January 2009.
The annual school touring project of Brecht’s
The Exception
and the Rule
, directed by the Head of Directing and Play
Writing, Tang Shu-wing, was performed in November as
well as in the Jockey Club Museum Theatre for Hong
Kong school students. Another School project was MFA
graduating student Pak Li Hon-chung’s play
