HKAPA Annual Report 2008-2009 - page 15

The School of Dance enjoyed another challenging but
very successful year in 2008/2009, with the enhancement
of collaborative activities and extension of international
links high priorities. Particularly exciting in respect of
the latter was the receipt of a very generous donation
from international Russian company
Basic Element
the purpose of developing artistic and cultural exchanges
between Russia and Hong Kong -- more specifically
through the Bolshoi Ballet Academy (BBA) and the
School’s Ballet stream. As a consequence, four students
-- Pak Ho-yi, Yuan Shang-jen, Zhu Xiaolin, and Song
Haifeng -- were chosen by Dr Marina Leonova, Rector
of the BBA, and Mr Anton Getman, Deputy Director of
the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia to attend the world-famous
academy from September to December 2009. Another
significant internationalisation goal was achieved with
the signing in February 2009 of a formal Partnership
Agreement with Laban, Europe’s leading contemporary
dance conservatoire.
A number of changes to the School’s staffing profile also
took place during the year. Dr Paulette Côté resigned
as Head of Academic Studies/Coordinator of the MFA
in Dance programme at the end of the academic year
to return to Canada. New Zealander Brenton Surgenor
was appointed Senior Lecturer (Academic Studies in
Dance) in January 2009, replacing Dr Júlio Mota who
returned to Brazil after 18 months as Visiting Lecturer;
and Contemporary Dance Artist-in-Residence Raewyn
Hill’s contract was extended for a second year.
